Topeka West High School

Domestic Water Solar Heating System

In the winter of 2010, McElroy’s was contracted to provide a domestic water heating system to Topeka West High School. 20 solar panels were installed on the roof of the school’s cafeteria. The panels help heat water through a heat exchanger, and the hot water is stored in a 500-gallon tank. The water is transferred to the campus kitchen, restrooms and showers.

In addition to capturing solar heat, the system has caught the attention of students and faculty throughout the school district. Topeka West High School created a website that enables visitors to access energy readings and learn more about the system’s advanced, earth-friendly technology. A curriculum based on the project was completed in the summer of 2011.

Given the school’s energy usage, the solar heating system will reduce approximately 12,000 pounds of green house gas emissions per year.
