State of Kansas Capitol Complex

Steam Utility Upgrades

The State of Kansas undertook a multiple-phase upgrade of the central plant and distribution systems that service the Capitol Complex. McElroy’s was contracted to provide mechanical and piping systems installation on the project.

At the heart of the Complex’s six buildings is the central plant, which uses tunnels to carry steam, condensate and chilled water to and from the buildings. McElroy’s installed new piping systems, including the pipe racks, throughout the tunnels. This process included the use of advanced welding methods and required X-ray examination of the welds. Custom fabrication in the McElroy’s fab shop helped expedite the project. The new piping system enables operators to more easily manage the central plant and distribution system. In addition, the upgrades deliver greater occupant comfort and increased energy savings.
