job summary

This position is for processing inbound and outbound shipments, loading or unloading material, pulling and preparing orders, delivery of material to jobsites and maintaining warehouse organization and cleanliness. Purchases tools, supplies and parts from various vendors and suppliers. Controls inventory to keep costs down while still providing supplies to field craftsmen and managers. Responsible for all paperwork regarding purchasing and credits for damaged items or unused items from a job site. Responsible for all warranty paperwork and returns.

essential functions & basic duties:

  1. Receive and fill orders from the field and shop. Must be able to lift 30 pounds on a regular basis.
    1. Store all materials and equipment that are received in their proper place as directed by the Shop Foreman.
    2. Check all material bins for inventory on a regular basis. Review with Shop Foreman and replace items that are used frequently.
    3. Track all tools, checking them out and back in when returned as directed by the Shop Foreman and Vehicle/Tool Manager.
  2. Assist Shop Foreman with charging inventory to correct jobs and processing credits for damaged or unused inventory.
    1. Process any damaged freight claims as instructed by the Shop Foreman.
    2. Return unused materials to warehouse inventory or to the supplier for credit as directed by the Shop Foreman.
  3. Stock inventory as orders arrive in the warehouse.
    1. Receive and check in freight as it arrives. Verify orders are complete as instructed by the Shop Foreman.
  4. Keep shop & warehouse clean and organized.
    1. Clean warehouse and outside yard at the end of each shift or as needed.
    2. Take out any trash.
  5. Follow other job-related instructions and perform any other job-related responsibilities requested by the supervisor.
  6. Drive a vehicle in a company capacity following all requirements as directed in the Fleet Safety Program.
  7. Operate motorized equipment such as balers, forklifts or chain lifts.
  8. Purchase Materials
    1. Confer with vendors to obtain product information, such as price, availability and delivery schedule.
    2. Control cost by researching best prices on stock material being ordered.
    3. Select a supplier that can, during peak work periods, deliver parts in a timely and efficient method.
  9. Receiving
    1. Load, unload, and move materials and equipment throughout the facility.
    2. Verify accuracy and condition of load.
    3. Document any issues, backorders or damages.
    4. Tag and notify required personnel of delivered material.
  10. Coordinate Deliveries with sheet metal Shop Foreman
    1. Provide accurate details on where and when the delivery is to be made.
    2. Ensure all materials are pulled and marked for the job or purchase orders for pick-ups are documented.

Major Challenges

Major challenges critical to the success of this job:

  1. Courteous and accurate service with customers/staff.
  2. Control inventory in order to provide items field craftsmen need in a timely manner while not wasting company resources.
  3. Communicate with vendors and field craftsmen to provide materials and tools for efficient use of their time.
  4. Ability to handle variations in workload.
  5. Ability to calmly handle a multitude of calls at one time. Maintain a calm and friendly tone of voice with each customer, in addition to being comfortable awaiting the next call.


  1. Training, education, or certification:
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  1. Knowledge:
  • General knowledge of Sheet Metal and HVAC parts.
  • General knowledge of purchasing and inventory control.
  • General computer knowledge.
  1. Experience:
  • Six months previous warehouse or Sheet Metal experience is helpful.
  1. Skills and abilities:
  • Customer service skills.
  • Must have good organizational skills and ability to pay attention to details.
  • Ability to operate a forklift, hand truck, pallet jack and other warehouse equipment.
  • Work well in a team environment.
  • Able to communicate effectively and be professional at all times, even under highly stressful peak work periods.
  • Must be self-motivated and willing to learn.


Internal Contacts – All managers and field craftsmen.  Anyone needing warehouse items.

External Contacts – May have regular contact with vendors and suppliers.

Physical Demands – Exerts 50 - 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls.
