Construction Alyssa Gentry: 15 Years of Reliable Help

April 24, 2026

“Although Alyssa Gentry has a lot going on every day, she is always willing to help,” said Jimmy Thomas, McElroy’s commercial project manager. “She multi-tasks extremely well, so even when she steps in to solve an issue outside her responsibilities, she’ll still get everything done that you need and expect. Alyssa’s help keeps everyone around her on task, and allows me to accomplish far more than I could without her.” Alyssa Gentry, assistant project manager, reaches her 15th work anniversary with McElroy’s on April 25, 2026. We appreciate how Alyssa is willing and able to cover all her own bases, and gracefully pitch in for others as needed.

Alyssa grew up in north Topeka and still lives there. The ten years prior to joining McElroy’s, Alyssa worked for a Topeka excavating firm. “I did a little of everything on the accounting side including payables, receivables and payroll,” Alyssa said. “Like McElroy’s, they’re a family-owned company and were great to work for. I probably would have stayed, but they began scaling back on their business and I was given an opportunity to move on.”

Pleased and Proud

Alyssa saw an ad for an accounting position at McElroy’s and applied for it. “When I interviewed, I learned the job was pretty much what I’d been doing for the excavators, just on a bigger scale,” Alyssa said. When offered the position, she was pleased and proud. “Everybody around Topeka knows McElroy’s. The organization’s reputation for having family values is well-earned. And the working culture is great. Everyone is reliable and focused on doing a good job.”

Accounting Team

“Alyssa was hired my first year at McElroy’s and was the first person to report to me,” said Nathan Stillings, McElroy’s CFO. “We worked closely together for the first ten years of our careers at McElroy’s and developed a lot of the processes we still use in the accounting department today. No matter what the task, she always put in the effort to get it done on time. We navigated a lot of changes and growth together while she was on the accounting team.”

Shortly after Alyssa’s tenth anniversary with McElroy’s, an assistant project manager position opened on the McElroy’s commercial construction team. “Between the excavators and McElroy’s, I had worked in accounting for about 20 years. It was time to take on some different challenges and move in a new direction,” Alyssa said. “I already knew most of the people in commercial construction. After I interviewed and received the position, the team was very welcoming. They helped me make a very smooth transition!”

Cohesive Team

As an assistant project manager, Alyssa handles jobs that McElroy’s commercial project managers Jimmy Thomas and Chad Hunsicker are responsible for, and assists the commercial project supervisors as well. She kicks off new projects, issues work orders and purchase orders for equipment and materials, coordinates with subcontractors and suppliers, and does closeout documentation for projects. “We have a strong, cohesive team that works well together, and I feel fortunate to be a part of this team,” Alyssa said.

Ready to Go

“The pace and demands of commercial construction can be stressful, but Alyssa never lets challenges get her down,” said Phil Harper, McElroy’s commercial project supervisor. “She has a super-hilarious sense of humor that helps lighten the mood. Alyssa always shows up ready to go, and is open and friendly. Whenever you need her help, it’s easy to ask her. You can tell she genuinely cares and will do anything for you that she can!”

Alyssa and her husband of 20 years, Steve, live in north Topeka. Steve has been a union electrician for about 40 years and works as a senior electrician for the state of Kansas. Alyssa and Steve enjoy spending time with their extended families, including three grown children, their spouses and four grandkids. Alyssa likes going places, and Steve tags along. She especially enjoys visting zoos with the family.

Friendly Assistance

“I couldn’t work for a better company, and I’m proud to be part of a winning team. We have a solid crew in commercial construction, with all genuinely good folks,” Alyssa said. "I hope to be with McElroy’s until I retire or win the lottery.” It’s clear Alyssa enjoys facing the expected – and the random – challenges that each day brings her way. It shows through the ways she provides such friendly and thoughtful solutions! We thank Alyssa for 15 years of providing reliable assistance!
